Soil & Water Management Centre

Developing & improving your soils

About the Centre

We are an agri-research and industry-led initiative to help UK farming make the most of its two most precious assets: Soil and Water

  • The SWMC is a central source of soil and water management information and expertise, and national forum for establishing essential improvement priorities.

  • Making practical soil and water management training and advisory materials widely accessible and co-ordinating farm-based workshops and demonstration projects.

  • Instigating and supporting applied soil and water management research addressing particular challenges and improvement opportunities.
Based at Harper Adams University, we work hand-in-hand with farmers and key research and training providers for the greatest overall industry value.

Make sure to check out the open library OpenFields, Soil Health Guides or Webinars, as well as info on Soil Management practices such Controlled Traffic Farming.

"Better appreciation of and care for our soil and water resources is crucial if we are to secure the sustainable improvements in farming and ecosystem efficiency we so clearly need."
Professor Peter Mills, Harper Adams Deputy Vice-Chancellor

"We undertake research of relevance to the industry, and provide a comprehensive range of knowledge transfer programs to ensure that the outputs of our research are translated into industrial practices. The Soil & Water Management Centre builds on these exceptional strengths. Soil is the fundamental resource on which the agri-food and bioresource industries (forestry, biofuels, etc.) are based.

The Centre plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic research, the industry and society, and we welcome approaches from industry and other stakeholders with a view to advancing the knowledge base in this important subject area."  Director - Prof Shane Ward
