09.10 Brexit - 5 months to go & where are we???

Speaker: AHDB speaker (tbc) + input from the NFU

Sarah will look at where Brexit discussions have got to and what this will mean for UK farming and farmers. With an Agriculture Bill passing through parliament that sets out the framework for a future domestic agricultural policy, what are the priorities for ensuring we have a thriving domestic farming sector post Brexit?

09.55 Soil structural condition in horticulture systems

Speakers: Lizzie Sagoo, ADAS

Lizzie will describe the outcome of an AHDB project that looked at the structural condition of horticultural soils before and after planting and how the data have been used to establish baseline information on typical soil management practices.

10.50 Managing soils to retain nutrients and address diffuse pollution issues

Speakers: Richard Cooper, University of East Anglia & Lucy Crockford, Harper Adams University

Is it possible to reduce diffuse pollution whilst maintaining a sustainable farming business? Richard/Kevin will describe how the four Demonstration Test Catchments (DTC) are providing evidence of how diffuse pollution from agriculture can be cost-effectively controlled to improve and maintain water quality, while Lucy will identify the on-farm sources of diffuse pollution.

Speaker: Paul Lewis, Harper Adams University

Too many cover crops have been sold and/or planted inappropriately. Do they really have a place in UK farming? Paul will reveal the science that will help you decide.
